postheadericon Multimorphic shows off its modular, open-source P3 Pinball machine at SXSW

When we spoke with Gary Stern on track in January at CES, flipper executive who knows that his was the only company currently producing pinball - and while it may be accurate to the extent where actual shipping systems go, there are a handful of new companies looking to get into the game one of the most convincing examples that we have seen is offering Multimorphic, a local company showing a prototype at SXSW Interactive Gaming Expo.

P3 is interesting for several reasons. First, and perhaps most importantly, the modular nature of the machine. If you look at the side (still unfinished) box, you can see a large crack in the center, where the top can be removed and replaced - because the machine is designed for home users, no worries it vandalism. The idea is essentially to provide a platform for developers and hackers at home to create their own games in what is essentially a clean slate.
